Nintendo of America president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime promised that the Wii would not have a shortage of games coming out, unlike previous Nintendo consoles, particularly the Nintendo 64 and GameCube. Last October, the Regginator told Newsweek that three Nintendo-developed games will ensure that there won’t be a drought of first-party love.
The first game? The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which is currently out for the GameCube and Wii. Example number two is Metroid Prime 3, and the third is Super Mario Galaxy.
Reggie said Metroid is coming out “early in 2007,” while Mario Galaxy’s launch is being “strategically timed” sometime during the year.
The comments were discussed in the Newsweek blog because of recent news from CVG that Metroid and Mario won’t be released until October 2007 at the earliest.
Reggie seems to miss the point. You see, there are even bigger questions that he didn’t answer (or purposely sidestepped): Are there any third-party AAA games coming to the Wii in between? Isn’t the lack of third-party support what killed the GameCube? What about the customary development delays Nintendo is known for? And even if Mario and Metroid do come out as scheduled, are three first-party titles enough to last Wii owners for an entire year?
