Virtual Marketplaces Discouraging Development Of New Games?

7d9c1363ada0b58b884ac010._.M.jpg

If you're like me, you probably noticed that the trend these days is to port-and-port and make rehash upon rehash of every conceivable game that made a profit in the past. Every title on each console maker's version of a virtual marketplace is testimony to that fact. I'm not saying that these are bad games. Some of them, like Final Fantasy III on the DS and the Xbox 360 port of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, are actually pretty good titles. My issue with it is that it discourages the development of new titles. After all, why reinvent the wheel, right? Why make it hard on yourself by making a new game when you can milk an existing one dry?

I'm writing this in response to two articles: Joystiq's and VideoGamesBlogger's. Just look at that list. Do you really want to play Super Mario Bros. 3 again? Okay, it's a good game, so maybe you do. Do you think you need the Wii to play that? I'm all for retrogaming, but I'd prefer it if a few new titles were also available.
