Supreme Commander Demo Available This Week

A demo version of Supreme Commander, the highly-anticipated strategy game from Gas Powered Games, is set for release this week. Players will be able to play a short portion of the single-player campaign and a skirmish map called "Finn's Revenge".

Expectations are high for this game primarily because of two things: one, it is considered a spiritual successor to Total Annihilation, one of the top ten RTS games of all time, and two, one of its designers is Chris Taylor. Taylor's games include the above-mentioned Total Annihilation and the successful action RPG Dungeon Siege. Both games, aside from being enjoyable titles, are also known for their technical design, which were quite ahead of the time they were released. Dungeon Siege's AI behavior and level design (no loading times!) were so seamless and automated that you felt like you weren't "playing" because your characters knew what to do and when to do it. Although there were times that there wasn't much to do except point your characters to where they needed to go next, the overall experience was still a positive one.

Supreme Commander's storyline pits three rival forces against each other: the cybernetic Cybran Nation, the alien-worshipping Aeon Illuminate and the tyrannical United Earth Federation. The three factions have been at war with each other for centuries with no end in sight. As Supreme Commander, you have the opportunity to end the war and bring victory to one of the factions.

Supreme Commander will be released on February 20.
