Review: Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War 2

Dawn of War 2 has a lot to live up to. The original and its expansions have all been critically-acclaimed, raising the bar for RTS games. Its emphasis on squad-based tactics brought gameplay down to infantry units instead of a heavy reliance on tanks and vehicles, but that doesn't mean that machinery were completely out of the equation. Is the sequel any better? Here are excerpts from a review:

Beyond looking good and playing well, the game is an amalgamation of the best bits of the previous games that have defined the company's brand of RTS over the years. Relic's title cuts its own path and makes no apologies for it. And it need not make any apologies, for Dawn of War II is one of the most interesting and fast-paced RTS titles in recent memory and an early but nonetheless strong contender for RTS title of the year.

What's interesting in the review is how Relic has given the game a seemingly more intimate feel. Having not played the game yet, the emphasis on maintaining a squad will certainly give you a sense of attachment. The new mechanics prove that Relic is willing to tamper with the winning formula that it established in the original. From a design standpoint, that's a good thing. Will it translate to good sales? We'll see.
