Review: Puzzle Quest: Galactrix

Puzzle Quest is the puzzle/RPG hybrid that proved to be a hit among casual and hardcore fans. The premise was ridiculously simple: match gems like any other casual game out there and you get your points. The RPG element adds a nice twist to it by giving you a character to work with. You can gear him or her up, use abilities and go on an adventure. It's all standard fare for RPGs, but for puzzle games, it was unheard of. D3 managed to pull it off. Can it do the same magic with Puzzle Quest: Galactrix? Read on.

Galactrix is a surprisingly robust game, but you really need to have an investment in the rote act of matching gems to appreciate it all. Combat and the various mini-games are all strikingly different, which stands as testament to developer Infinite Interactive's ability to keep a rather simple puzzle mechanic feeling fresh, but the sheer multitude of activities detracts from the opportunities to wage puzzle-based war on enemy ships -- arguably the most fun of the lot.
