Nathan As Popular As Lara? Nathan Who?

252px-Uncharted.jpg

It's funny how a single question can be the highlight of a lengthy interview. CVG had a chat with Uncharted: Among Thieves game director Bruce Straley. When asked about the popularity of the game's protagonist, Nathan Drake, in comparison with Tomb Raider's Lara Croft, here's what he had to say:

Do you think Nathan Drake can ever be as big a star as Lara Croft?

Straley: Why do you think he's not already there, if not beyond that point already, in terms of popularity?

I feel that Nathan Drake can stand on his own in any line up of the video game pantheon. We've created something new with him by infusing him with traits more associated with a good movie protagonist than just a video game icon.

Honestly? No, I don't think he's there yet in terms of popularity. Place the two in a single picture and I doubt that anyone would recognize him. On the other hand, Lara has the head start, the fan base and the boobs to make him forgettable. Sure, the movies and some of the games have been lacking, but speaking strictly in terms of popularity, he's not even in her league yet. Still, the statement is already generating hype. Let's see if Uncharted is going to put its money where its mouth is.
