Multiplayer GTA IV Details & More On The PS3 Price Drop

I missed it yesterday, but apparently all is not well with the new PS3 because at $600, you get an 80GB hard drive minus the Emotion Engine. And what's the Emotion Engine? The CPU behind the PS2. Bottom line: the new PS3 will not have backward compatibility at the price of $600. You're actually getting less by paying more. Once again, Game|Life has the story and the analysis:

But the real news came when people started taking a closer look at the package shot for the new version, and found out that the hardware-based backward compatibility would be removed from the 80 GB version, replaced with the limited software-based functionality from the PAL version of PS3.

I'll just cut to the chase and get to what we should be getting:

That said, the $500 version is the PS3 to buy. This is the last iteration of the hardware that will include full, complete backward compatibility. Yes, Sony could technically start burning the midnight oil and getting the software functionality into shape, but that doesn't seem to be a priority. If you care about playing older games, this is what you want. Contrariwise, if you think it's a fair trade to get a free copy of Motorstorm and a trivial amount of extra storage in exchange for having the dial turned way, way back on your backward compatibility, well, hey. Sony's betting you're the majority.

In other news, a few details about multiplayer gameplay in Grand Theft Auto IV surfaced today, so here's what we can expect from the ever-controversial series:

one multiplayer mode will allow players to face off against each other, but they have to find each other first, before filling each other with lead.
players who commit enough crimes to raise their wanted level to seven stars will appear on the radar, opening the door for the other player to track them down and deal out some death.
a more realistic recognition system means that if you drive into a secluded area during a chase, where no-one can see you getting out of your car and into another, you can emerge in the new vehicle and drive right past a squad car without being noticed.
