Hands-On: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 3

Gamespot was able to get their hands on Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulation, the third game in the Phoenix Wright series for the Nintendo DS. Here's what they had to say regarding gameplay features:

The second turnabout starts off like any other, but features a surprising twist that turns the whole case upside down. This is the first case in the game where you'll have to do your own detective work. Gathering evidence is done just as it was in previous games. You move from location to location examining suspicious items and presenting evidence and character profiles to try to build a defense before you get to trial. Like in the last game, some people aren't entirely forthcoming with their answers. When this happens, chains and locks appear over those people indicating they have a psyche-lock. You'll need to gather specific information to break down their defenses before you get the truth.

I'm a late bloomer when it comes to the Phoenix Wright series. In fact, I am so late I'm still in the middle of finishing the second game.

I'm not entirely sure on what the article meant when it said that you have to do your own detective work since you always did that in the previous games. The sequel added two new features: first, you were now able to present people along with evidence and second, you now had to break a person's "psyche-lock" in order to become privy to withheld information. The core gameplay remained the same after that, and I expect Trials and Tribulation to do nothing less. As an adventure game, I don't think there's a great need to overhaul the gameplay of the Phoenix Wright series. I'm more interested in the story and the logic. Still, the DIY detective work sounds intriguing, so we'll see how that will turn out when the game is released later this month.
