Battle Arena Toshinden Is Back

In an age where we are treated to some truly world class 3D fighting games, I'm not really sure where Battle Arena Toshinden fits. We've got Virtua Fighter 5, Soul Calibur IV, Tekken 6 (on the way), and so on, but Toshinden barely holds a candle to these franchises. I guess it's not really fair comparing a contemporary game to one that was a launch title for the original PlayStation.

Do you remember Toshinden? It was a fighting game that accompanied the PSX and borrowed some influence from Virtua Fighter and other fighting games. Well, it seems that the Battle Arena is coming back, because Takara Tomy wants to resurrect the franchise on the Nintendo Wii. It's still very early on in development, so we're not completely sure what this new Toshinden will be like. It could be el cheapo WiiWare, but I'm thinking that it's a full title.

Now if you'll excuse me, Soul Calibur IV -- a better weapons-based fighter -- is beckoning to me on the Xbox 360.
