Animal Crossing: City Folk - More of the Same

accf-rev.jpg

You know, I actually had pretty high hopes for Animal Crossing: City Folk, because I thought the developers would bring something new to the franchise. Whatever this new thing may be, I was hoping that it would motivate me to take out yet another gripping mortgage with Tom Nook (because I can't take out a mortgage in real life) and build up yet another home, interacting with the same villagers in a new and exciting ways.

Unfortunately, the general consensus for Animal Crossing: City Folk is that it is largely a mashup of the original GameCube Animal Crossing and the DS AC: Wild World. Yes, the map is twice as large as on the DS and you are offered access to a city where all the major vendors hang out, but realistically it's more of the same. The Wii controls for chopping trees and catching fish add little to the game's appeal.

1Up gave the game a 'C' saying that this "is all just the same old routine with extra goodies that do little to change things in a meaningful way." GameDaily echoes this sentiment, giving the game 70/100 and saying that "the graphics look last generation and we had little fun using the WiiSpeak microphone." Games Master UK (80/100) is slightly more positive, but they do say that "fans of the DS version are going to feel short-changed by the lack of imagination in this Wii retread."
